MainStreet.com has unveiled its first Happiness Index, a new national survey of
economic well-being, ranking all 50 states and the District of Columbia
in order from fiscally happy to fiscally sad. Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas were the happiest states while California, Florida and Oregon ranked at the bottom. The methodology used to calculate the index was based on state
residents' non-mortgage debt as a percentage of their annual household
income; the state's unemployment rate; and the number of foreclosures in the state, all equally weighted. MainStreet.com is owned and operated by TheStreet.com.
